So, I've mentioned that today is our wedding anniversary, and the first one we've spent apart. All day, my thoughts have been filled with DH.
It's not that we do anything "special" to commemorate this day: there's always a card and maybe some quiet time together, our favorites for dinner. We go out for a date night near the 16th, if not on it... and we have that scheduled for this coming Saturday night.
In fact, when I think back over the past 8 anniversaries, there are only a few which stand out:
2001: our first anniversary... just 5 days after the terrorist attacks, and 1 day after we finally made it home from Hawaii (yeah, yeah, I've heard it all before... not a bad place to be "stuck"... unless you have a ton of family who live/work in NYC, and the only way home is to get on a huge 747 filled with jet fuel. Then, not so much.) We spent this anniversary laying together on the couch, eyes glued to the television screen, in a sort of emotional daze. I think one of us may have uttered "Happy Anniversary" in there somewhere.
2002: BigBro was an infant and we didn't have a regular sitter. Instead of going out, DH got take-out for us, and we had a candlelit, romantic dinner at home.
2003: I was pregnant with Princess, and the restaurant where DH'd made reservations had noted it was our anniversary. I remember sipping the complimentary glass of champagne, very aware of my burgeoning belly.
2004: We took a riverboat dinner cruise on the Mississippi. I'd never done anything like that before, and remember that it was quite fun.
2005: our fifth anniversary... It was Friday night, and we spent it in the surgical waiting room at Children's Hospital as Princess underwent last-minute surgery to remove a mass from her abdomen. I recall commenting to DH, "for better or worse, right?"
2006: We went back to the Greek restaurant where we'd had our very first date.
2007: We went to an upscale restaurant known for it's gourmet fare.
2008: We tried a new restaurant we'd heard lots of good things about, and which had private booths separated by curtains. The food was excellent... as was the privacy.
This year, we are going out to dinner (still TBD) and then are meeting some friends for a Big Band dance in an airport hangar. Should be fun. Really, for me, it doesn't matter what we do or where we go, as long as we're together.
